Description

Cobalt(II) chloride is used in humidity indicator in weather instruments. In the anhydrous form, it finds use in electroplating of cobalt, in organic chemistry and is a precursor to cobaltocene, (bis(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(II), which is a good reducing agent. It also serves as a Lewis acid. Cobalt chloride is an indicator for water in desiccants, owing to the reversible hydration/dehydration coupled with distinct color change. Cobalt chloride is useful for producing invisible ink as it turns blue when heated and becomes invisible once it gets cooled. Cobalt(II) chloride catalyzes cross coupling of aryl halides or vinyl halides with aryl grignard reagents in excellent yields.

Anwendungen
Kobalt(II)-chlorid wird in der Feuchtigkeitsanzeige von Wetterinstrumenten verwendet. In der wasserfreien Form findet es Verwendung in der Galvanisierung von Kobalt, in der organischen Chemie und ist eine Vorstufe von Cobaltocen, (Bis(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(II)), das ein gutes Reduktionsmittel ist. Es dient auch als Lewis-Säure. Kobaltchlorid ist ein Indikator für Wasser in Exsikkatoren, da die reversible Hydratation/Dehydrierung mit deutlichen Farbveränderungen einhergeht. Kobaltchlorid ist nützlich für die Herstellung unsichtbarer Tinte, da es beim Erhitzen blau wird und nach dem Abkühlen unsichtbar wird. Kobalt(II)-chlorid katalysiert die Kreuzkopplung von Arylhalogeniden oder Vinylhalogeniden mit Aryl-Grignard-Reagenzien mit hervorragender Ausbeute.

Löslichkeit
Frei löslich in Wasser und Methanol. Löslich in Alkohol, Aceton, Äther, Glycerin und Pyridin.

Hinweise
Hygroskopisch. Nicht kompatibel mit starken Oxidationsmitteln.
